Niger, officially called the Republic of Niger, is a West African country named after the Niger River. It is a landlocked country bordered by Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Mali and Burkina Faso. Niamey, which is the capital of Niger, is the political and administrative seat of Niger. Niger has a population of about 20 million. Niger’s main language is French.

Value Chains

Hides and Skin

Consultations in Niger led to the prioritization of the hides and skins value chain. More than 3 million hides and skins are produced annually, while 2.5 million are exported with minimal processing and 600,000 are processed locally with poor quality. The Nigerien government considers private sector development and improvement of the business environment essential to achieving its growth objectives. Increased intra-regional trade is considered an important condition for economic growth in both the country and the region. This policy will be reinforced by improving equal opportunities in the labour and financial markets linked to this value chain.

Planned Activities

Public policies aspire, among other things, to strengthen trade capacity and develop Niger’s exports to the West African regional market. This policy will be reinforced by improving equal opportunities in the labour and financial markets linked to this value chain.
