Togo, officially called the Togolese Republic, is bordering Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso and the Gulf of Guinea. Togo, with an estimated population of 8 million, is dependent on agriculture. Lomé, which is also the country’s capital, is Togo’s largest city.

Value chains

Pineapple

Togo is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The Togolese economy is largely based on agriculture, which accounts for 40% of the national GDP and has been growing steadily over the years. Two-thirds of the population, who work mainly on small farms, make their living from agriculture and livestock.

The project will aim to develop pineapple processing as a value chain. This offers opportunities in terms of production and export of organic pineapple juice (more than 6,000 tonnes/year), organic dry pineapple (more than 12,000 tonnes/year) and the creation of about 1,000 jobs.

The objective is to take advantage of opportunities for value creation and to migrate to new and higher-level activities along the value chain. This will give MSMEs, women, youth and other actors in the food and processing industry an opportunity to develop.

Planned Activities

Togo grows products with high export potential, including soybeans, pineapple, rice, cassava, maize, ginger, cashew nuts, palm oil and cotton. The project will target pineapple processing as a value chain. This offers opportunities in terms of production and export of organic pineapple juice (more than 6,000 tonnes/year), organic dry pineapple (more than 12,000 tonnes/year) and the creation of about 1,000 jobs. The GIZ is currently supporting, from an agricultural point of view, the development of organic pineapple with a high yield and high natural sugar content.
